I was looking up ancient Egypt in the catalogue under subject. I found several books that sounded good and copied down their call numbers. But, when I went to the shelf I could not find all of the books. I forgot to check the catalogue record to see if the book was currently on the 'shelves' and not out on loan. I also forgot to check if any of the books were held at the branch of the Learning Commons where I study.

I was looking for a particular book in the library collection that I needed for an assignment. I found the book listed in the catalogue but all copies were on loan. In the end I had to buy a copy from the bookshop.

I know now that there were two ways I could have avoided this expense.
  • I could have placed a hold on a copy that was on loan, so that when the book was returned, it would be held at the Lending Services Desk for me
  • I could have enrolled with CAVAL and borrowed a copy from another TAFE or University library.

My teacher gave me the title of a useful book for some project research that I was doing. I looked it up in the catalogue, but found that it was on loan and would not be returned until after the date my assignment was due.

If only I had gone to the subject headings link that appeared on the catalogue record for the book, I could have found other useful books on the same topic!
